Wednesday Wisdom and Independence

Yesterday we celebrated Independence Day in the U.S. and I’ve been thinking about the word independent.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines independent as:

  • “not subject to control by others: self-governing”
  • “not affiliated with a larger controlling unit”
  • “not requiring or relying on something else”
  • “not looking to others for one’s opinions or for guidance in conduct”
  • “showing a desire for freedom”

On Independence Day we celebrate these things in relation to our country, but how can they also apply to us as individuals? (Notice the same prefix on “independent” and “individual”… it means “I, me, my”)

Some questions to consider might be:

  • What is actually in my control and what isn’t?
  • Am I dependent on others opinions too much in any area of my life?
  • Where do I desire more independence and what can I do to gain it?
