It’s that time of year…the time we start thinking about “Back-to-School”.
For parents this means things like registration, shopping, meeting teachers, finding the bus stop, coming up with lunch ideas, coordinating practice and game schedules and rides, etc.
If you have a child with mental or physical challenges it might also mean setting up some extra helps for them like a 504, IEP or other learning/behavior plan, requesting an aide and extra meetings with the teacher.
There are always mixed feelings about the kids going back, right?! A sense of relief, but dreading having to be back on a schedule and dealing with those morning battles. Excitement for them to learn and experience new things, but dreading the practice and homework battles. π
This academic year I have a college senior, a college freshman, a high school sophomore and a 7th grader. Even though my kids aren’t thrilled to be going back, the beginning of a new school year is always like another “new year” for me.
It brings up an itch to learn or do something new. To reevaluate my goals and the direction I’m heading. To decide how I want to spend any “free” time I might have while the kids are at school. To hit the ground running when they head out the door for their school day.
I also loooooove shopping for school supplies. I wish I had a reason to buy all the cool things for myself!! Instead, I’ve been thinking about what “supplies” I need in order to be successful in what I desire to accomplish while they are at school. Things like creativity, confidence, persistence, consistency, accountability, passion, initiative, courage, and the willingness to take uncomfortable action and maybe even fail. I wish I could just buy these at the store π
If you don’t have school aged children, what feelings does this time of year bring up?
What do you want to accomplish from now until May?
I invite you to take a few minutes when you’re done reading this email and reflect on where you are headed, and see if there is a gap between where you are now and where you want to be.
